Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a leafy green vegetable that originated in Persia. It belongs to the amaranth family and is related to beets and quinoa. What's more, it's considered very healthy, as it's loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Spinach is among those green veggies that contain the highest amount of oxalic acid. Eating too much spinach may result in the formation of calcium-oxalate, which can cause kidney stones. It can also lead to hyperoxaluria i.e., excessive urinary excretion of oxalate. They are particularly high in Calcium ,Fiber, Folate, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Vitamins A, B-6, C, and Vitamin K. |

How Much Space Does Spinach Plants Need? Space your spinach plants or seeds 3-5 inches apart. Five inches will give you enough space to grow mature spinach plants. Space the plants closer (three inches apart) if you want to grow baby spinach greens. |

What Type Soil Does Spinach Like? Spinach is grown commercially on deep, loam soils. If your garden soil is acid (pH below 7), then be sure to lime the soil based on a soil test to raise the pH to 7.0. Many gardeners opt for raised beds, 6-8 inches above the existing soil, especially if they have a heavy clay soil to deal with. |

Harvest Time Small spinach leaves can be harvested with scissors by simply cutting the leaves at the stem. One way to do this is to start harvesting the outer, older leaves first and then gradually working your way into the center of the plant as those leaves mature. You can also just cut the whole plant off at the base. |
