In general Onions are ready to harvest as soon as they reach a useable size. However, for storage, your cue to start the harvesting process is when the leaves begin to flop over or turn brown at the edges. After a week like this carefully dig them out of the ground using a fork. They are particularly high in Vitamin C. |

How Much Space Do Onions Plants Need? The onion (Allium cepa L., from Latin cepa meaning "onion"), also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium. Onions should be spaced 2 to 4 inches apart, with 12 to 18 inches between rows. Onion seeds can be sown close together, and thinned out once the seedlings have grown. Sets, or small immature onions, should be spaced like onion plants. Green onions are the exception and can be planted one inch apart |

What can I plant next to Onions? Onions are great at repelling insect pests like cabbage worms, cabbage loopers, and cabbage maggots. Broccoli, kale, cauliflower, turnips, kohlrabi, and brussels sprouts are all Brassica vegetables that fare well when planted next to onions, as the onions keep away most of the pests that plague cabbage crops. |

Harvest Time Autumn-planted sets are ready to harvest by early to mid-summer, while spring-sown or spring-planted onions are ready in late summer to early autumn. Although it's sometimes suggested to bend over the foliage or gently lift the bulbs to break the roots, this is no longer recommended. |
