For best performance, plant melons in hot, sunny locations with fertile, well drained soils. Plant melon seeds 1 week to 10 days before the last spring frost date. Watermelon and honeydew are more cold-sensitive than cantaloupe. Melons will not all ripen at the same time, so plan to pick them as they become ready. They are particularly high in Vitamins A and vitamin C. |

How Much Space Do Melon Plants Need? Melons need room to roam. Space plants 36 to 42 inches apart. Or, to save space, plant melons 12 inches apart at the base of a trellis. When trellising melons, tie vines to the trellis daily, using soft plant ties that won't crush stems. |

What Type Soil Do Melon Like? Melons grow best on well-drained, sandy loam soils, with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Soils with a pH less than 6.0 will produce plants with yellow foliage that set few or no fruit. You can improve your soil by adding well-rotted manure or compost in spring or fall. |

What can I plant next to Melon? Melons are one of the most compatible plants in the garden and do well when planted with most anything including beans, peas, onions, leeks, chives, and garlic. They also flourish with cabbage, broccoli, carrots, kale, okra, cauliflower, spinach, brussel sprouts, and lettuce. |

Harvest Time Harvest by twisting the fruit gently. At full maturity and peak flavor, the fruit breaks away from the vine easily if slightly twisted. Melons will not all ripen at the same time, so plan to pick them as they become ready. Do not wait for the melons to separate from the vine on their own, as they will be over-ripe. |
