Kohlrabi, also called German turnip, is a biennial vegetable, a low, stout cultivar of wild cabbage. It is another cultivar of the same species as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, Savoy cabbage, and gai lan. It can be eaten raw or cooked. They are particularly high in Fiber, Potassium, Riboflavin, and Vitamin C. |

How Much Space Does Kohlrabi Plants Need? Space kohlrabi 9 to 12 inches apart in an area with plenty of sun and rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. |

What Type Soil Does Kohlrabi Like Kohlrabi that matures in cool weather is deliciously sweet. Kohlrabi needs at least 6 hours of full sun each day; more is better. Give it fertile, well-drained, moist soil with plenty of rich organic matter. A soil pH between 6.5 and 6.8 discourages clubroot disease. |

Planting Instructions Plant in a location that receives ample sunlight (at least 6 hours, more is better) and has rich, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. While kohlrabi isn’t a heavy feeder, it is helped by having its soil dressed with 1 inch of compost before planting. Avoid planting kohlrabi where other vegetables in the Brassica family have been grown in the previous 2 or 3 years. This helps to prevent the spread of disease and nutrient deficiencies. In spring, once soil temperatures have reached at least 45°F (7°C), sow seeds directly in the garden, for an early to mid-summer harvest. Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. In rows, space kohlrabi seeds about 2 inches apart in rows 10 to 12 inches apart. |

Nutrients Normal- Fertilization. Apply ½ cup per 10 feet of row of a nitrogen-based fertilizer (21-0-0) 3 weeks after transplanting or thinning to encourage rapid plant growth.
