Cucumbers is a widely-cultivated creeping vine plant in the Cucurbitaceae family that bears usually cylindrical fruits, which are used as vegetables. Considered an annual plant, there are three main varieties of cucumber- slicing, pickling, and burpless/seedless — within which several cultivars have been created. They are particularly high in Vitamin K. |

What Type Soil Does Cucumber Like Although cucumbers do best in loose sandy loam soil, they can be grown in any well-drained soil. Cucumbers must be grown in full sunlight. Because their roots reach 36 to 48 inches deep, do not plant them where tree roots will rob them of water and nutrients. |

Planting Instructions Plant seeds 1 inch deep and about 3 to 5 feet apart in a row, depending on variety (see seed packet for details). For vines trained on a trellis, space plants 1 foot apart. Cucumbers can also be planted in mounds (or “hills”) that are spaced 1 to 2 feet apart, with 2 to 3 seeds planted in each mound. |

What can I plant next to Cucumber? CARROTS, PARSNIPS, RADISHES and ONIONS are good choice for cucumber companion planting as they do not encroach on each other's territory. The root vegetables primarily grow beneath the soil, whereas cucumbers send down one larger tap root and also a few shallow roots that don't extend far. |

Harvest Time Most slicing cucumbers for fresh eating should be harvested when they are seven to nine inches long and have a dark green color. If they get much larger than this, they'll be bitter and won't have a pleasant texture. When you pick cucumbers, leave a small, one-inch section of stem attached to the cucumber. |
